Those words of Robert Henri, author of “The Art Spirit” expresses my feelings about the creative life.

What is creativity?

There are three types of creativity:

1.       Everyday creativity or Artful Living-the creativity that permeates one’s life…the way you handle your job, solving problems around the house, planning dinner parties, or taking in a sunset.

2.       Art-filled Life-filling your days with art and the joy that art brings.

3.       Art-committed Life- a lifetime spent creating in a particular domain to which you devote yourself.

How many of you have the 1st level of creativity in your life? How about the 2nd? How many of you have or would like to have an art-committed life? Hopefully, you would have all three areas in your life, but when you decide to devote yourself to creativity in a specific area, you raise the stakes tremendously. My experience is that there are many people who would like to create something artistically, but don’t.

However, creativity can be used in all fields. For example, when I was working as a school administrator I approached my job using my creativity. I was honored by being awarded the best co-administrator for the state of California because of the creative things I did in my job.

Whatever your avocation is, you can bring creativity to it. As you perform your usual duties on the job or in your home, think about:

• What would make this task easier?

• How could I do this differently?

• How could I make this more pleasurable?

• How could I reorganize this task to give me more time?

• What would a forward thinking person, like Steve Jobs, do with this task?

• How could this task be made more aesthetic?

  These thoughts will make you look at your jobs more creatively. These are the ways that enovators think. Try it.
